This wildlife sanctuary is home to tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian bison. In the park’s north, Periyar Lake is popular for boat rides. Farther north, spice plantations surround the town of Kumily.
Extending over an area of 297 square miles (770 square km), the sanctuary encompasses Periyar Lake, formed in the early 1900s by impounding the Periyar River, and is located near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border about 73 miles (118 km) south of Ernakulam and 170 miles (274 km) northeast of Thiruvananthapuram.

By Rail : Kottayam Railway Station is the nearest railhead from Periyar, located at 101 km. Avail a taxi/bus from the train station and enjoy the exploration of the wildlife.
By Road : Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar, is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
