Youth Hostels Association of India, Meghalaya State Branch is organizing a 7 day trekking cum Caving in Meghalaya, covering the places in Shillong and Sohra (Cherrapunji), from 28th Oct to 13th Nov 2025.
 
Group 1: 28th Oct to 3rd Nov 2025 Group 2: 31 Oct to 6th Nov 2025
Group 3: 4th Nov to 10th Nov 2025 Group 4: 7th Nov to 13th Nov 2025

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
 
Participation in the programme is open to all educational institutions, individuals and recognized units of YHAI. Participants have to bear all travel expenses from their place to Youth Hostel Shillong and back. The Age bar for Males is from 15 years to 65 years and for Females from 15 years to 60 years.
 
HOW TO REACH THE BASE CAMP:
 
The nearest Railway Station and Airport is Guwahati. Sumo and Tourist Taxi are available from the railway Station and airport to Shillong which is about 100kms away from Railway Station and about 130kms from Airport.
 
HOW TO JOIN:
 
Members desirous to join this programme may apply on a prescribed Registration Form available from National Office Website (www.yhaindia.org) downloads trekking registration form), duly supported by a Medical certificate (www.yhaindia.org) downloads trekking medical form). Please upload the scan copy of YHAI membership ID, details of the payment of registration form & Medical Certificate as an attached in the Email ID: yhaimeghsecy@gmail.com and submit the same at the time of reporting, failing which you will have to bear the printing charges.
 
ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES:
 
Dormitory at base camp & homestay at Sohra(Cherapunjee)/Laitryngew
 
FOOD & WATER SUPPLIES:
 
Simple vegetarian food and safe drinking water will be provided.
 
WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING ALONG:
 
Beside their own personal belongings, the participants need to carry jacket, t-shirt, umbrella/ raincoat, torch, trekking bag pack/rucksack, sneakers suitable for trekking/ trekking shoes, cap, sunglasses, tiffin box, spoon, cup, water bottle etc.
 
Day Wise Schedule
 
Day 1 : Participants shall report at Govt. Youth Hostel, Shillong from 4 PM onwards . At 6 PM an orientation/training session will be held.
 
Day 2 : To facilitate acclimatization for the main trek, the second day consists of Rhododendron trek upto Shillong Peak. Further, participants will proceed to Elephant Falls after which they shall return to the base camp at Shillong.
 
Day 3 : Participants will trek from Mawphlang along the famous David Scott Trail to Lad Mawphlang, and will be then transported to Laitryngew. Night halt at Laitryngew (Distance to be trekked: approx. 14 kms; difficulty level – Moderate)
 
Day 4 : Trek from Laitryngew to Sohra via Lyngksiar Falls, Wei-Sawdong Falls, and Prut Falls. Night halt at Sohra/Laitryngew (Distance to be trekked: approx. 14 kms, moderate difficulty)
 
Day 5 : Transfer by bus from Sohra to Nohkalikai Falls, followed by trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge, Rainbow water falls and blue lagoon and back . Transfer by bus to Sohra/Laitryngew for night halt (approx. 12 kms, hard )
 
Day 6 : Transfer by bus from Sohra for caving (Mawsmai cave and Arwa cave), followed by local sightseeing, which includes the viewing point for Wahkaba Falls. In the evening, participants shall return to Shillong base camp, which will be followed by evaluation and Certification.
 
Day 7 : Check out by 9 AM after breakfast
 
Facts
 
SAFETY & SECURITY:
 
Participants shall not hold any of YHAI Organizer responsible wholly or partially for any injury, accidents, illness and such other unforeseen eventualities during expeditions.
 
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
 
Please note that this is an environment friendly trekking/expedition. Do not litter any wrapper or spoil the route in any way. In case you find any wrapper/ Plastic bags or anything left by participants on the way, please carry the same with you and dispose at the proper place. It may be mentioned that minimum physical fitness is desirable from the participants as the terrain is quite tough and challenging.
 
The Central Government employees can avail special casual leave as the Trekking Expedition organized by YHAI have the approval of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, (Dept. of Personnel and Training), Government of India, vide office order No. 28016/89-Estt (A), dated 25th October, 1989.
 
Participants who successfully completed the expedition and abide by the discipline of the programme will be awarded Certificate.
 
Cancellation Policy
 
In case any participants is unable to join the program, application for cancellation in writing or email to the State Secretary 10 DAYS before the scheduled date booked by the individual and avail 50% of the participation fee paid. If such notice is received after the time given no refund will be admissible.
